Walt Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Our neighbor (Bob) worked at Technicolor, the studio that made color film possible in the 50's. He convinced my father that this was the movie to see. Thank God for Bob.
The movie really affected me for years. Nemo was my hero. One man against the
enemies of his lost country. And almost beat them too.
This is the only book I have read three different versions. I was very lucky
to live in the small town of Bishop CA. There, in the school library, I found a
1924 version of the book. The reading was very different from the others. The
latter books did a great deal of upgrading to Nemo's technology. And Nemo was a harsher character.
Any way when I was a boy, as usual, I made a balsa wood model of the Nautilus. Not very good as I remember. It lacked detail. The sub was smooth and looked more like a fish than the Nautilus. So I made up for it here with a detailed model of the Nautilus. This model has more detail than anything else I have done to date. That's largely because this movie had more detail than any thing else I have done.
For the interior views I always make sure the scenes fit within the body of the ship. Here is the interior of the Wheelhouse, both the right and left sides. The next two are the map room located directly under the Wheelhouse. Note the spiral stares they align with the opening in the Wheelhouse. The next 3 pictures are the enormous Nautilus pumps which are located to the rear of the reactor room and from the outside they align right under the skiff. The pumps stand some fifteen feet high and six feet at the base. The cylinders are about one foot in diameter. The rocker arms and cam shaft swing is nearly three feet. Most people mistake these for the engines, but they are not. The drive shaft from the engine to the propeller runs thru the center of the "A" frame pumps but does not drive the pumps. Looking from the read forward the reactor room is located thru the small door to the lower right. Note the large pipe that bends in just enough to allow for a door.
