Conquest of Space.
This is a great George Pal film. I mean for a science film over 50 years old you'll have to look hard for points to date it. The science was great. The Rocket Ship actually had to reach 25K mph to leave the Earth's gravity. It was the general belief that the atmosphere of Mars could support a glider type landing.
Men and equipment actually floated around in the weightless conditions of space. When faced with no water
on Mars they had to wait for the Earth to come around the sun before they could return. No monsters,
no invaders, no unexplained Universal disturbance. Just men trying to push the frontiers back.
Moving man forward and away from the darkness.
Wow that sounds great anyway. And with George Pal at the helm how could it miss.
The special effects are top notch. You will watch it today and wonder how come so many newer sci-fi films were done so badly.
We start with a winged ship leaving a permanent platform in space headed for Mars. There is the dreaded close encounter of a giant asteroid but a little excitement is needed over the long haul to Mars.
While in orbit over Mars the first stage drops into the Mars atmosphere.
