Forbidden Planet Congratulations, you are at the best Sci-Fi movie ever made, Forbidden Planet. Well my favorite any way. Before the drawing, a short plot overview because this movie deserves it. The C57D has been dispatched to search for a group of scientist missing on Altar IV. On landing they meet Robby, Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira. No one else is alive from the original party of scientist. As Morbius put it each member of the original search party had been literally torn limb from limb despite all precautions. As Commander Adams finds Morbius is obsessed with a hidden machine deep within the Planet. A machine with a view 20 miles on each side. The Krell (the original inhabitants of the planet) built it and set it up so it could never be shut down. And after 20 years Dr Mordius never discovered why it was built or what its purpose was. Now on with the drawings. I did an image capture of the saucer at landing. When the C57D was as close to a right angle to the camera I froze the image. Brought it into my Modeler and away we go. There is a model of the C57D which shows it to be 165 to 170 feet across. Done! One of the things about the ship I liked was the fact it was a saucer and it didn't spin. I know the engine section spun but it wasn't outrageous. In shooting the scenes the directors of Forbidden Planet had great space shots in which the ship wasn't everything. The shots started or had the C57D pass through, but the ship always disappeared into the distance. Showing how vast space really is. Rocky Jones, Space Patrol, Commando Cody always shot the ship, And always at the same distance. Forbidden Planet gave space some vastness. Some of the scenes here show the ship in the vastness of space. These are frames from short movies I created. But all end with the ship disappearing into the blackness of space. It was funny my dad and I hadn't gone to see Forbidden Planet. It wasn't until the Academy Awards were handed out and Forbidden Planet was nominated or won so many a wards for special effects. The scene where Morbius showed the ventilation shaft. Wow! Even on a 12 inch TV my dad said we have got to see that! Among the best movies made it gave some realizem to the ship with its size and an interior that seemed to fit. Actually leaving space for an engines, life support and the odds and ends you need for deep space flight. I actually enjoyed doing the interior, It fits the ship, has space for the crew, to sleep, eat and enjoy reading in a lounge. The main view plate could have been better placed for the captain to use when flying the ship from the center console. What we have here are the Main Cabin Area. Showing the engineering, DC Station and center console. The scenes are always across the center globe which I just loved. I have no detail shots of the center console controls. So the switches are just from watching the actors move and sounds used. And YES I do have a complete drawing of Robby the Robot. I'm still making up the next set of scenes. Continuing with our tour is the Big Machine. A view twenty miles on each side. There was the question What is it all for? Dr. Morbius never answered. He didn't know. The next scene is just outside the lab. Next is the lab itself. This is a work in process. It needs a lot more detail. But Im onto something else right now. The last two are the Main Batteries. Used to stop Morbus's ID monster. My favorite person (not living) Robbie the Robot! I have a 15 inch model of him and the detail is pretty good. As a boy I had a Robby the Robot walking toy. It had a small remote for forward and backward buttons, batteries connected by a wire. It knocked down many a cities made of dominos. Robby is mistaken for the Lost in Space Robot D9 over and over again. The last two pictures are of the saucer's drive system. Okay what makes the C57D go. From the movie's introduction we know in the late 21st century men and women in rocket ships explored and colonized our solar system. Soon after the speed of light was first obtained and later greatly surpassed. As the movie continues, just before DC stations, Commander Adams told the chief the ship was about to drop below light speed and just after DC stations the Commander gave the ship's speed as .3897 of light speed. So this is a faster than light ship, it does not use hyper-space. So we need lots of power and a warp bubble. Next, how fast can she go. Our destination is Altair (a white main sequence dwarf star). According to various estimates is 16.7 light-years away from our Sun. (http://www.solstation.com/stars/altair.htm) Then during the introduction we learned the ship had been out from Earth base just over a year. With that we know we must have been doing just over 16 times the speed of light. No one mentions the power source of the saucer. We know the main drive was removed for a short period to build a transmitter. But the power is not mentioned. Lets have the saucer powered by a multi-phase wave / string generator. This wave / string generator would be fueled by element 115. An extremely heavy atomic material but non radio active. The primary waves / strings generated would be gravity and magnetic. If any one noticed the saucer has a silver ring right around the outer edge. So we'll make that the warp emitter. We'll encapsulate the C57D in a grav-o-metric field. The red half sphere on the bottom is where the wave / string generator will be placed. When at maximum power it glows.Forbidden Planet. Continuing with our tour is the Big Machine.
